Taroshi (Icicles) Falls Measurement Event

The water from the Togeshi Forest that flows into the Kuzumaru River freezes on the mountainside, forming large icicles. The thickness of these icicles is measured and used to predict the harvest of the year.
"Taroshi" means icicle, and is a corrupted version of "taruhi" (hanging ice). It is said that the name "Taroshi Falls" came from the fact that the icicles that form resemble a waterfall. The waterfall is about 13m high.
A measurement is held every year on February 11th to measure the thickness of the tree. The largest thickness ever recorded was 8m, set in 1978, when there was a bumper harvest.

*The measurement will be held regardless of whether there are icicles or not. The measurement result for 2025 was "unmeasurable. "

■About the Taroshi Falls Period

A temporary bridge is set up across the Kuzumaru River from late January to late February every year, and after crossing the bridge, you can Taroshi Falls the rope between the trees to reach Taroshi Falls. (*We recommend that you bring along some cold weather gear, as well as sturdy gloves and boots for walking through the mountains.)

This temporary bridge will be removed around March, and access to the area will no longer be possible. If there is a risk of Taroshi Falls collapsing due to rising temperatures, or if the water level of the river rises due to snow melting on the mountains, the temporary bridge may be removed and access to the area may be prohibited during February. We ask for your understanding.

*The removal schedule will be posted on the Hanamaki City page below.
