Youkaichi Hanging Hinamaturi

As the name suggests, hanging dolls are small dolls that are tied together with strings and hung up. Each doll has a meaning, with the cicada representing the wish that "a crying child will grow up" and the Japanese bush warbler representing the wish that "a child will have a beautiful voice."

According to one theory, this custom began during the Edo period when women around children would bring in small dolls they had made to replace the expensive Hina dolls that ordinary households could not afford at the time.

Even today, local women carefully make hanging dolls stitch by stitch using old kimonos.

At the Youkaichi Hanging Hinamaturi, the venue is packed with approximately 10,000 handmade hanging dolls, and the sight of the colorful decorations on display is breathtaking.
